Gracious Galoots, I bought a Sandusky horned smoother recently for $35 from Josh Clark ( www.hyperkitten.com). https://photos.app.goo.gl/HIn9DsxcwdWdZiyp1 I'm wondering about the wisdom of changing the plane's role in life from smoother to scrub. The mouth is about 1/2" wide. The iron is good: 3/16" thick at the rear of the bevel (bezel, Jeff) and 1 3/4" wide. Lots of life left in the iron. It's a Sandusky laminated blade. I would only regrind the blade to an appropriate radius and not otherwise modify the plane. Suggestions, compliments, disparaging remarks? Regards, Dwight |

Hey Dwight, Did you beat josh out of a $1000 plane? $100 plane? Is anyone going to pay you $100 for it? You have already established what it is worth. Come on, it's lunch money! Modify it and use it as you wish. Enjoy it! Bill W. *Grumpy* In Beautiful downtown Nottingham, PA |

Dwight A scrub is used with more set than a smoother - as much as 1/16". If the mouth is still open with the blade at a scrub setting - the shaving will have thickness equal to the set - then the shavings will clear the mouth. Nice looking plane. Hey Dwight: I’ve also got a handful of older worn (ie wide mouthed) planes. Traditionally, those all naturally were converted to scrubs or otherwise, re-soled. I don’t take any to the grinder, but I do start sharpening with heavy bias on the corners and within a few Sharpening’s I’ll have the desired 7 or 8 in radius needed for scrub plane action. I personally like the old euro horned planes, but I have several old beech coffin smoothers that also work great. Can get very thick shavings off. Cheers from Barcelona Claudio |

Thank you to all you gave me that little extra shove down the plane-conversion slope. Another small project. Regards, Dwight |
