I’ve also got a handful of older worn (ie wide mouthed) planes.
Traditionally, those all naturally were converted to scrubs or otherwise,
re-soled.
I don’t take any to the grinder, but I do start sharpening with heavy
bias on the corners and within a few Sharpening’s I’ll have the desired 7
or 8 in radius needed for scrub plane action. I personally like the old
euro horned planes, but I have several old beech coffin smoothers that also
work great. Can get very thick shavings off.
