Phellow Photogggraphers A neighbor jsut gave me a nice camera that she has not used for about 5 years - digital SLR, NIkon L110. It is fairly easy to use, but does not have the ability to independently adjust aperture or shutter speed - but there are lots and lots of auto setting and an auto-auto function that seems to work most of the time. It is doing something I can’t understand or process out. In my shop, under fluorescent lights, things show up yellow - very yellow. Even after playing around in the editing section of the Mac, they are not anywhere near right. And the yellow does not show up til after the shot os taken so there is no adjusting it out before shooting - and besides, the white balance adjustment does not do it. Here is the best I can do with this particular shot: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ruby1638/40485491093/in/album-72157706524329895/ click to the left a few shots and you can see what my point and shoot Canon does - pretty good Any suggestion from those of you who do a beautiful job in photographing your stuff?? Even if you are no good at it like I am, any ideas? Ed Minch |

Ed: Is this a drive-by gloat on an exquisite set of shelves finished in Gibson's TV Yellow? J'accuse! it's a beautiful day in OlyWA, you'd be in shirtsleeves wearing a hat, if you were here How horrible it is to have so many people killed!---And what a blessing one cares for none of them! It is not sir, and I resemble that remark. I am making something that I will share with all of you in a while when it is done, but for now I need the ability to take pictures or you will never see it. Ed Minch |

Ed There is a firmware update for that camera which purportedly fixes that issue. https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/fw/29.html Don't lose power while you're updating it! I think many, if not most people are simply unaware that firmware updates are very frequently available for digital hardware, much of which is shipped for sale before it is really completely ready for the big-time. It is common with both hardware and software, either because the companies don't know of deficiencies, or because they simply want to start generating income from a product to cover the cost of development. As I understand it, release dates are often dictated by marketing and finance depts. rather than engineering. So it's generally worthwhile checking mfrs' websites for updates. Hi Ed You need to look at the white balance settings either do a custom one, or set it to florescent. https://www.manualslib.com/manual/113016/Nikon-Coolpix-L110.html?page=65 Pete -----Original Message----- From: OldTools |

Since I read this tale it has been stuck in my mind like an earworm. I am always uncomfortable buying a tool plus a story. I can usually figure out what the tool is worth but how much extra do I pay for the story? I like to think I limit my buying on that site to well-photographed user tools but I sometimes fail. I'm glad you pursued it and got the listing taken down. The tool will resurface somewhere but in what guise? I like that you made the "I'll take the damaged but useable tool, keep the story" offer. Conversely, a bunch of years ago, I saw a plane on the 'bay that I knew the backstory because I had just read it in Hack's book on planes but the seller didn't. The seller seemed to be selling it for somebody else and got bad advise, or took a bad guess as to what it was. In the "questions" below the listing a fracas broke out where names were called and people's lineage and compos mentis were questioned. I thought it was amusing and put in a low-ball bid and went on to other things assuming people who knew more would be duking it out in the last 4 seconds. I was surprised to find the next day that I won the auction. I don't use it so I sometimes think of selling it. I can guess what it's worth as a tool but how much is the story worth? It was small maker that made a scant few planes and went quietly away. I've not seen another for sale. Maybe the story isn't worth anything. In the end it will sell for fiddy cents at the garage sale after I croak. |

Kevin What’s your address?? Could you share a photo of this mythical plane shaped object? Ed Minch |

Ed, Address? I wasn’t planning my post-mortem garage sale for this weekend, but I’ll check with my wife. Photos — can do. Crummy cell phone picks. Better pics of the same model on p. 239 of Garrett Hack’s The Handplane Book if anyone still has a copy. https://kfoley.smugmug.com/Reed/ It was made by Jeff Warshafsky aka Reed Plane Co. He set out to make a Norris- type planes in the 80’s. Road hugging weight seems to have been a design parameter. After taking pictures I put it on the scale. It’s 7 lbs, 5 oz. The wood work is a little — uh… elementary? Some of the hardware looks ala McMaster Carr. He picked what was thought to be a really good off-the-shelf iron at the time, a Berg Cryo. Nice, but standard bench plane fare by weight and not near the heft of the irons in the Norris planes he was trying to emulate. And the iron on the Reed beds on metal not wood like the better Norris planes. A gallant effort but the story goes that at a few more than 100 planes he was looking at too many hours at a Bridgeport mill for too few dollars and went on to other things. Cheers, Kevin |

Yes. They were delivered finely tuned. It works well. The 1980’s price sticker reads $449. Not that anybody ever paid a lot of money for a tool that didn’t work well. Kevin |

Back in the days of silver base (film) photography there were filters to put on the front of the lens for this sort of problem. There were also large glass sheets for use in theater lighting. Have fun Sam Pickens |
