Assembled Galoots: A couple of tools have come my way that could use some identification. First is a hammer of unusual shape. The head has a maker's mark which is an arrow that appears to go through a circle. The opposite side is stamped "Germany". This came from an industrial arts suite in a decommissioned school. I was wondering about the use of such a hammer and the maker, if possible. http://galootcentral.com/components/cpgalbums/userpics/10827/Hammer1.pd f">http://galootcentral.com/components/cpgalbums/userpics/10827/Hammer1.pdf http://galootcentral.com/components/cpgalbums/userpics/10827/Hammer2.pd f">http://galootcentral.com/components/cpgalbums/userpics/10827/Hammer2.pdf Second is an unusual square with a rotatable blade. The markings are faint but I can make out the name "Topps" on the blade. Who might Topps be and what would these markings be for? This came from my Grandfather's assemblage of old tools. (He was much too practical to ever have a "collection") http://galootcentral.com/components/cpgalbums/userpics/10827/Topps1.pdf ">http://galootcentral.com/components/cpgalbums/userpics/10827/Topps1.pdf http://galootcentral.com/components/cpgalbums/userpics/10827/Topps2.pdf ">http://galootcentral.com/components/cpgalbums/userpics/10827/Topps2.pdf http://galootcentral.com/components/cpgalbums/userpics/10827/Topps3.pdf ">http://galootcentral.com/components/cpgalbums/userpics/10827/Topps3.pdf As always, any help is appreciated. Oh, sorry for the PDF files, my camera's files were too large to upload and I'm not sure how to condense the files. Jack John J. the hammer looks like a sheet metal tool that I've seen before in use. |

Used for silver smithing. Or other softer metals. Maybe body work but I doubt it. What you have is a "raising hammer." http:// www.bing.com/images/search?q=Raising+Hammer&Form=IQFRDR > A couple of tools have come my way that could use some identification. > First is a hammer of unusual shape. Galoots: Seems my mystery hammer is a silversmith's raising hammer and deserves to be cleaned up. Now, given that it came from a public school shop class it may never have seen more than sheet aluminum (aluminium, Jeff) or an occasional sheet of copper. Hmm, I have a 50# anvil and a good collection of tongs, but only one suitable hammer for hot work, now I have this singular silversmith's tool. Maybe we're at the top of another slippery slope! Thanks for all the responses. Jack P.S. Happy Thanksgiving to all. We are truly blessed, in spite of ourselves. John J.
