Seems my mystery hammer is a silversmith's raising hammer and deserves to be
cleaned up. Now, given that it came from a public school shop class it may never
have seen more than sheet aluminum (aluminium, Jeff) or an occasional sheet of
copper. Hmm, I have a 50# anvil and a good collection of tongs, but only one
suitable hammer for hot work, now I have this singular silversmith's tool. Maybe
we're at the top of another slippery slope! Thanks for all the responses.
