190533 James Thompson <jdthompsonca@s...> 2009‑04‑08 Re: Trash day gloat
I recently got a 100 foot 14 ga extension cord in brand new condition
for $3 at an estate sale. One of the plug's prongs had been broken off
so they thought it was worthless. I bought a replacement plug for
about $3 and installed it. All of my extension cords have been
acquired this way. Used old tools to replace the plug, too!

The general public has no clue about any kind of repair.

I am sitting here trying to think of how many things I -didn't-
acquire because of a bad plug, wire or switch. Practically everything I
own came to me because of one of these three.

Its the first thing I look for, always!

Swap meet, yard sale, dump,... the number one attraction for me is to
try to find something wrong with the pigtail, because then you know the
rest of it is probably good.
If the wire to the devise looks good, be highly suspicious!

Plugs of all kinds can be obtained by the sack if you hunt hard
enough. I keep a supply of male and female plugs on hand. Usually its
the female plugs that are harder to find, but I scored a nice sack of
hospital grade female plugs one time and have been working on those for
years now.

Oh in case you aren't familiar, the grade of plugs goes, home use,
hospital, industrial. It is the size of the contacts/lugs and the wire
size you can attach to them that makes the difference. Not that you
couldn't tell from the size of them!

I make up extension cords in all lengths and wire sizes for various
duty. When I get a new/old cord I will try to notice which size I am
missing and cut to length for that.
I like a 10 footer quite a lot and have those in many wire sizes. 15
and 20' too.
No sense wrapping up a 100 foot cord when you don't have to.

I hate batteries! Did I ever mention that? Battery devises of all
kinds are made for yuppies who expect to throw them away in a year and
even if they don't, they die anyway!
I have never bought a used battery operated devise.
The cost of raw batteries is a ripoff wherever you look, and usually
close to the price of a new drill or whatever.
I expect my stuff to last near forever.

I can fetch a cord and use it, my feet aren't painted on. :-) And
then I know it will work and not just another dead battery wasting my time.
   yours Scott

190528 "Steve Lineback" <steve.lineback@a...> 2009‑04‑08 Trash day gloat
Enjoying my new schedual at work, 4 ten hour days with Wednsday saturday
and Sunday off meep meep, I went out for breakfast this morning. On the
way back I went through the neighborhood to the north which has trash
day today. Saw a younger guy dragging an old electric leaf blower to the
curb Along with its extension cord. He said it stopped working and the
cord has a funny plug so its not good for anything. Telling him I would
like to try to fix it I put it in the trunk and turned arround for the
hardware store. An hour later and $2.98 lighter the blower was in my
trash and I have a new fifty foot 10 gauge grounded extension cord. Life
is good. Steve

If it wasn't so depressing (and profitable for some of us), I'd have to
laugh at the number of people who will throw things out rather than try and
fix them. Fixing an extension cord is something you shouldn't even have to
think about.

And a 10 gauge cord - That's a pretty good cord.

Steve, I fully realized what a great group of kindred spirits we have
here on the Porch when I asked if it was okay for a Galoot to godumpster-
diving. It is not only acceptable, but encouraged if not downright
mandatory!

My favorite saw vise is the Sargent I pulled out of a pile of rotting
Lumber left by the side of the road. You shoulda seen me carrying it
home on my bicycle.

Nice save, Steve. Gotta love the Porch! Steve, in Howell NJ

Why yes I did. A Knapp (I think the stamp on the handle isn't clear at this
point) and Cowlels, Sheffield, cabinet makers screwdriver, a rescaled
Perfect Handle type screwdriver from Galootaclause/Old Millrat and a leather
working knife of indeterminate age that I keep around as a light duty shop
knife.
The Galootish use or the extension cord is to move the small fridg to the
patio for summertime extended sessions with my Texas microwave ( barrel
smoker ). The one exception that I make to electron burning in the shop I to
make sure that adult beverages are kept at a proper temperature.

Is it too far OT to ask Steve to post pictures or plans of his barrel
smoker? I got a couple of drums that need some recycling and I've been
toying with the idea of a smoker.

190540 WesG <wesg@g...> 2009‑04‑08 Re: Trash day gloat
Geez!
You guys actually have to go out and search the trash *yourselves*?
In my neighborhood (shop neighborhood, not at home thank goodness.) I
employ the help of a crack team of scavenging experts to scour the
area dumpsters, alleys and loading docks. Well, to say I "employ"
them might be a stretch, they were out doing their thing before I
owned the place they actually found ME... but I digress.
Anyway, once every couple of weeks one of the guys will come by with
a shopping cart full of stuff. Lately, they've located a business
that throws away steel "scrap" ranging in thickness from 10 gauge
down to 1/16th. The pieces vary in size from 5 x 48" to 2 x 4 feet.
They also bring in square tube cutoffs and C-channel! I usually pay
them in $ and gatorade, but so far the per pound price is about $.10
and I don't have to leave the shop.
I always tell them that if it looks like junk, I'll buy it, but if it
looks like somebody set it down and turned their back, I'm not
interested.

Cheers,
Wes

This 10 and 14 ga cord you've been talking about on oldtools,
is it hemp or nylon? ; )

Except that here in the UK just yesterday I had to give up when trying to
replace the lead of a new 4-way (too-short) extension socket (Tesco).

Now I have a multi-bit screwdriver that removed the screws with fancy
tamper-proof heads, but the clip-together plastic construction was, I fear,
apparently unbeatable, apart from destroying the thing.

It looks as though we are now all graded as galoots, but non-Galootish!

Jeff, playing with words.
