Gathered Galoots - Please accept my humbly submitted bio. A young member of the Neanderthal branch of the Galoot specie; two GIT and a SWMBO in the Kansas City area. Grew up on WWS and that long running PBS home improvement show/commercial that rhymes with This Old Mouse. Eagle scout, trained as a chemist so prone to overthinking my woodworking. Interested in buying and selling, and then using hand tools as I am just not that interested in paying extortion to Woodcrap/Rockslide/HomeDespot/Lowies. Is it okay to admit that I take a moment with my tools before going on an airplane trip? Generally, my dreams are: a date with Mary May, to time travel back to visit the Roycrofter establishment at its peak and the time I bought a 605 1/2 at an estate sale for $15 (you knew there would be a gloat some where, right....). Reverently Submitted, James Bennett |

Welcome, James! You’ve come to the right place. I’m also in the Kansas City area (Liberty, to be precise). Glad to know of another Galoot in the metro. Congrudgulations on your 605 1/2 acquisition. $15 is definitely gloat-able! Cheers, Alex Moseley |

Nice of you to join us, James, indeed. I want to offer a quick word of caution about that 605 1/2. There have been a variety of counterfeits made of this particular model that require a significant amount of time and expert effort to detect. I'd be happy to inspect it if you like. No charge, of course, but it would help if you paid postage. Convincing an elderly pensioner to pack it and pay postage in your stead would also suffice. Enjoy your days, all, cur |

Morning Mr. Seeliger - Thanks for bringing this possibility up! I searched the old tools archive and found that very little is said about counterfeit bedrock planes and virtually nothing is said about how to detect "fake" bedrocks; this leads me to think that this topic might be a very interesting thread for the group? I'd be willing to provide pictures, measurements and answer questions to the forum for discussion. This plane is the cornerstone of my stock prep, so you'll forgive my unwillingness to let it travel to, Washington, is it? |

I recall a fellow in main made a large number of counterfeit bedrock planes. He kind of screwed up though. First he cast them in bronze instead of iron. People could tell them apart right away. Besides, his production costs were so high he had to put his own name on them and market them as "premium" planes. ----- Original Message ----- From: "james bennett" |

Why, Kirk, you wouldn't suggest anything untoward or misleading, would you? Nor would I call anyone out for any reason.. Baitin? Me? Ahem, ahem. (tongue firmly planted in cheek) BTW James, we do have a great deal of fun poking other members in the ribs from time-to-time. All part of the Porch personna and why many of us still hang around.
