I love scrapers! Scrapers are just magic on skates. I scrape something
somewhere every single day.
Rams horn, sometimes called gullwing scrapers (by a few of us weirdos),
are just about totally overlooked in our collecting and using
communities alike.
But once this was the THE industrial scraper responsible for factory
furniture of all kinds.
The classic Atkins scraper was wildly popular (why they are common now).
This is a fantastically effective tool, but it helps if you are 6'
6". 25 years old and 245 pounds of muscle.
I am not 25 anymore, to say the least, lol.
So a 3 1/2" wide blade is a monster for me to push much less do it all
day. I wanted something more my speed.
A few weeks ago on CIHI (facebook tool auction page) a gullwing scraper
came up. It looked promising being made from some kind of exotic wood. I
couldn't tell how big it was in the pictures.
The auction was about to close and nobody had bid (like I said
overlooked) so I didn't have time to ask the size. I bought it anyway.
To my utter delight when I opened the package it was small! A
2 1/2" blade, whoo hooo!!
It was carved from a tropical hardwood as I suspected. It has kind of a
mahogany color but its much much harder.
It was beautifully carved but not usable by a long shot. I needed to
true up the blade bed and flatten the sole and heavily scrape/sand it
all over. I gave it a good polish and a little varnish.
One of the difficulties with rams horns are the screws that hold the
nose piece on. This one came with skinny screws that allowed the nose to
flop around.
It of course needs to be lined up with the sole precisely in use.
So I did drill larger holes for larger screws. Piston in a cylinder fit.
I chose carriage bolts so I had a nice round head and could register
them in the nose section holes.
I do not own anything but these pitiful mass factory wingnuts. uck
I did polish and blue them, but still I am looking for finer quality
1/4-20 wingnuts if you see any.
Anyway as you might guess overall I love it 🙂

a 2 1/2" blade
