Hi,
I've been lurking on the old tools list for some years now. Sometimes
keeping up with the discussions, other times taking a break for months
or more. Here is a bit about me.
I'm 32. Live in Indianapolis, IN, USA. Grew up in a small town in
New Hampshire, and hope live back near there some day. I've been
married 7 years and have 2 little one under the age of 2 right now.
My day job is software development and general computer stuff.
I try to do some wood projects here and there but mostly it is just
messing around learning how to use the tools I have and building
"practice" projects so that I can learn. By the time the kids are in
bed I'm usually tired too, but if not I'll poke around in the
workshop/garage for a hour or so. I figure things will be much the
same for some years as time with them is more important/fun and so on.
Guess I'll have to get one or both of them interested in working with
Dad in the workshop once they are a bit older and we can learn
together.
I got interested in hand tools mostly after starting to watch Roy on
PBS a few years back. I'd figured that I'd never have enough money or
space to have all the tools Norm uses to build anything, but once I
saw that Roy could make useful things with a modest collection of
tools I got interested. I've read some books, magazines and poked
around web sites and the OT archives for guidance, but mostly need
more time to learn hands on. I did take a dove tail with hand tools
class with a friend and enjoyed that, also thinking about taking a
bowl carving class in the near future.
My current tool collection is not very big but I'm building it up as I
can justify new tools or with birthday/Christmas requests. I've
received some older tools from family and friends but don't hit the
flea markets / auctions / tool shows. Not sure I know enough to
separate the junk from the good stuff at this point and might get too
excited to use good judgement.
Finally got around to writing up a bio so I can consider picking up
the occasional for sale item.
Matt
