I've been listening in for a couple weeks, so I guess its time to
introduce myself.
I have recently taken up instrument making. To be specific, I am
building an archtop guitar, using Bob Benedetto's book on the subject
(the only one available, but its a good one). For those not familiar,
an archtop guitar is a jazz guitar similar in look to a violin (arched
top and back, f-holes, etc).
I found this group because of my interest in the small round bottomed
planes used to carve the top and back of these guitars. I have
acquired several, including a couple of older ones (at least I think
they are older). I also have a set of violin planes I acquired from a
local violin maker.
Through this group I also discovered Scary Sharp(TM) which has
significantly improved the use of these planes.
I do however, have a question. While I have used Scary Sharp to
flatten the back of my planes, I have been retiscent to mess with the
rounded bevel. Any recommendations as to how to best sharpen these?
As for me, during the day, I am self-employed as a desktop publisher/
business writer.
At night I take care of my wife and 4 month old son. After they are in
bed I work on my guitar until midnight. I'm missing sleep but enjoying
it!
Despite having little real woodworking experience, I am gaining
confidence that I can do this project! I have already made mistakes
and worked my way out of them. I am presently almost done carving the
top and back.
I already have my 2nd and 3rd guitars planned.
