93444 paul womack <pwomack@e... 2001‑05‑01 fixing old woodie jack
I'm just in the throes of tuning up a car boot jack plane.
I won't upset you all by telling you what I paid <>.

The cutting stuff cleaned up nicely in the normal way (I.Sorby, Stamped
and logoed cap-iron). 2-3 hours with abrasives.

The crud came off the body with 0000 wire wool, and I then waxed
it. And glued the tote back in.

The body had a remarkable 1/6 bannana warp in it. Whole thing.
I've jointer'd it out on the sole, cleaned up the bedding
(grunge), and the plane now works pretty well.

One point of interest is the long toe. The whole plane is 15 3/4" long,
but the distance from front of plane to "wear" is 6". Unsually
long.

The maker's name has been chiselled off, which is odd.

Anyway, the shaving aperture is now a somewhat generous 5/32"
Should I patch this a little tighter?

And do any patching experts have any opinion on how thick
the patch should be. Dunbar recommends 3/8"
