38086 Ian McKinley <mckwood@h...> 1998‑02‑26 Bio. Ian McKinley
Hello on the porch. I have been lurking for several months and have
found this a very nice place to be. I have learned a lot and hope to
contribute on occasion. I am 42, marred, one daughter, three dogs, and more
projects on my list then I will ever get done.
One grandfather was a carpenter and cabinetmaker, the other was a
mechanic for the newfangled tin lizzy and came from a line of blacksmiths.
Dad was a high school biology teacher and a home handyman who in later
years became a carpenter.
I was exposed to power tool woodworking in jr. high and high school
but found it less than rewarding. I discovered James Krenov when I was 19
and Roy Underhill in his second season. My biggest interest in old tools is
how they are used and why they are designed the way they are. I find the
development of hand skills very rewarding. One of my biggest interests is
woodturning and lathe building. My first was a spring pole lathe inspired
by Roy. My second and third lathe were powered by remote waterwheel
(electricity). I am planning a treadle lathe in the future. I have done a
small amount of home machine shop hobby work and dabbled with
blacksmithing and tool making.
I really think my hobby is restoring old tools, making new tools and
learning to use them not woodworking.

                     Ian

It is the oldtools list after all. Welcome aboard.

Ernie
I'm not a collector, really. I'm just a user without enough time.
