Galoots

Yesterday was the semi-annual TOTT sale in Pickering, just east of Toronto.
Kathy and I went, as usual. Dan Indrigo was there, and the three of us went
out to a local pub for lunch. I don't think Dan bought anything, but I did.

Did I NEED anything? Nah. But I grabbed some stuff anyways.

The most interesting thing I acquired was a 24 inch precision Starrett
rule.

Oh, yes, the label. I added that. Some of you may know/guess why already.
And some may need to ask their favourite search engine for an explanation.

Yup, it's a shrink rule for cast iron.

I also picked up a nice little fine natural waterstone. It's the perfect
size for packing with my spoon carving kit. And since one cannot have too
many clamps, I also acquired a pair of cute little 6 inch Jorgensen
handscrews. My final purchase was a very fine tapered half round file. I
wish I had this one when I was shaping that wing nut on my book plow.

Then there were the interesting things I didn't buy.

I've never understood why people buy those crucible lump hammers. At least
not when you can buy old ones for this kind of price. And this is from a
dealer, not a yard sale, where it would be even cheaper.

The magic word this year was "Axes". Almost every dealer had axes. There
were at least three tables full of just axes. I managed NOT to buy any of
those.

One dealer had a veritable warren of rabbets.
Mostly good solid users.

This guy had all the bells and whistles for sale:

There were the usual mangled socket chisels, as well as some awesome long
thin vintage paring chisels. Strange to see them displayed together, as if
they were the same kind of thing...

And I saw a couple of frankenplanes. But this one takes the prize.

Damn, that's both brilliant and ugly at the same time.
I have no more words.

Rust hunting season is officially open, good luck everyone!
