GG’s, Since we just saw one lovely toolbox, how about another? I don’t think I ever found a way to show off my version of an English Tool Chest when I built it in 2016. Up until then I had been using a standing tool chest that I built and really didn’t like how it worked. After reading the Anarchist Tool Chest, I thought why not give a traditional floor chest a shot. The worst case being I end up with a nice blanket box and not a tool chest. So I picked up 100bf of Alder and had at it. I added some oak to the mix for areas of heavy wear. After making the first measurements of the sides lengths with a tape measure, I never measured anything again other than using some pinch rods to transfer needed dimensions. It was a lot of fun and I love working out of it now. I usually roll it behind me when working at the bench and just turn and grab what I need as I go. I have a pretty messed up back that is always in pain, but I hve no issues leaning on the chest and reaching it to get what I want. I dropped a bunch of pictures on a shared Google Drive if you would like to take a look at how the project progressed. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1E9uX59jYue2-TyV1SiKNHv0pw5h9Lhl o?usp=sharing">https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1E9uX59jYue2-TyV1SiKNHv0pw 5h9Lhlo?usp=sharing All the best, Brent Parkin Regina, SK Canada eh! |

Hey Kirk, The only reason those screws are funny looking to you is because you are in the U.S.!! The Robertson screw is a Canadian invention and it is the screw of choice in everything up here in the Great White North. Has been since before I was born. I actually give second looks to things that have old slotted screws….. and I get downright annoyed when I see a Phillips LOL. But I do hear ya. When I chose to use them, I figured Chris Schwarz’s disobey me note in his book covered me for using them. ☺ Brent From: Kirk Eppler |

Hey Ed, If you look at the later images in that set, you can see that I painted the chest a dark blue. It was milk paint followed by Tung Oil and wax. I think it looks pretty spiffy. In fact, it has become the colour of choice for me if I build workshop related things. Brent From: Ed Minch |

Hay Brent, Really nice work! And a lot of work, too. What holds the squares in the lid? Are they recessed? Bill W. Nottingham, PA Woodworkers visit me at http://billwebber.galootcentral.com/ |

Hi folks Yes, Robertson screws are great. The US has them too. They call them Square Drive. They are almost identical to our Robertson but not quite. If I remember the one has straight sides to the square and the other have a slight taper. I was in the hardware business for over 30 years selling mostly reproductions of antique hardware. For those we sold slotted screws or they just didn't look right most of them being oval head. For universal face mounted brass hardware we used Phillips screws to match they just looked better, but for construction hardware it is all Robertson screws. We still have a quantity of Victorian brass hardware if anyone needs some Nick |
