You can buy perfectly serviceable shellac in a can at the hardware store.
Zinsser is the brand we see here in the mid-Atlantic.  Brush on a coat, then hit
it with 220 grit paper, then a couple more coats.  To get a GREAT finish takes
some practice, but to get a good one is not too difficult.
