A question for the hammer-heads on the list:

Quick version:
Is anyone familiar with the term "a Ball-TEEN hammer"?

A bit more detail:
My beloved was working on crossword this evening
and one of the clues was "Ball ____ Hammer".

The answer turned out to be "TEEN".  (We're sure of this.)

Now, I've seen various spellings of PEEN/PENE/PEAN/PEIN (even, in 
British circles PANE)
but I've never heard of a "Ball Teen Hammer".

Did puzzler writers screw up?   Or am I just showing my ignorance here?
