Nathan, There may still be sources out there for new T-handle augers, but I'm not aware of them. You might find some new, old stock somewhere. Do you need a "Blind-Footed" auger or one with a lead screw? If it has a lead screw, do you want one cutting edge or two? There are augers with square shanks which fit into a Tee handle that tightens on the square with bolts. I got some of the augers, none of them as large as 2", from the estate of a boat builder. Twenty years later, I found the matching Tee handle at a Flea. Most of these augers are blind-footed. One has to make a starter hole with a incannel gouge or a conventional auger bit. John Ruth |

I'm looking for an old one with a lead screw and two cutting edges. I found two of them both in decent order though they both need new edges and lips filed. Probably a good half hour on each. The guy (I've delt with him before) wants $50 for both or $35 each. Nathan Goodwin H.I.S. Carpentry Honesty. Integrity. Service. |

Nathan, You do realize, of course. that augers are their own slippery slope. Next, you will be accumulating "Auger Bit Files", which are still available new, but at fairly stiff prices. Then, since you have a Jones for large augers, you'll be looking for other shapes of safe-edged files. And handles..... The last auger I bought was in a secondhand and antique shop in Keyport, NJ. It's smaller than what you need, but as a price point I paid $15 plus tax for it. That included an original handle which had been spoke-shaven rather than turned. Probably a good half hour on each. The guy (I've delt with him before) wants $50 for both or $35 each. Depends a lot on condition. I've sold good users that were cleaned for $25.00 that needed a sharpening but that ain't too bad with those guys. Some of the collectible and early makers I can get more. Obviously a good handle is a must. Light checks at the ends aren't much of a problem, bigger checks through the entire handle are. A couple or three worm holes aren't bad but once they get that Swiss cheese look, the handle is pretty much history. Just another point of information, you will get very creative with the cussing while using one of those big ones, depending on the wood being bored...... I plan on using it mostly for making shrink pots and for boring holes for legs in my shaving and saw horses. So it's going to be used a bunch. I'm not afraid of re handling one. William, I'll pass on that one it would too cumbersome a length for what I need. Thank you. Nathan Goodwin H.I.S. Carpentry Honesty. Integrity. Service |

There is the chance that a person could be drawn into collecting augers. I have limited myself to what will fit in available storage. I have a lot of storage. |

GGG A question - does BLO have a shelf life? I have a coat on some things, then some brand-new, fresh, wipe on varnish over it, and I am having trouble with the varnish drying. If you have to much storage, you need more tools. If you have too many tools, you need more storage. Ed Minch |

It is a balancing act. To date storage growth has kept up. On Jun 25, 2017 10:12 AM, Ed Minch |

Ed---I too have had troubles with fresh wipe-on varnish drying, as well as modern exterior latex paint that seems to be tacky after three months on some outdoor furniture---no linseed oil, boiled or OW under them, either. Could it be the new formulations? I have some 3in1 unboiled LO, Turps and Beeswax that's about ten years old, and I keep blithely on using that, just did a workbench top. It dries very quick, and seems never to get rancid, still smells heavenly to me, though not to SWMBO. Gary I just put them on the back patio on an 86°, relatively dry day and it solved 90% of the problem - I hope one more day will do it. Linseed oil, stockholm tar, WD-40 - all candidates for an aftershave I would buy: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ruby1638/34693655314/in/dateposted-public/ Ed Minch |
