Amen. My leg vice is a plank, operated my a huge cider press screw. Period. 

For dovetailing wider pieces, I just back out the screw, and replace the normal
6" plank with a wider leg.

This provides the advantages of a moderate size twin screw face vice, when you
want it, without the mechanical complexity, and without having to sacrifice jaw
depth when not dovetailing......
