I'm taking a spoon carving class with Peter Follansbee during the first
weekend in Dec.  I've been sharpening my carving knife and cutting some
apple wood to bring.  I've also been getting my little Winchester camp axe
ready, as well.  Cruising the interwebs a couple weeks ago, I came across
the blog of Tim Manney, a chairmaker from Portland, Maine (
http://timmanneychairmaker.blogspot.com).  In one post, he described
modifying a carpenter's hatchet for use as a spoon carving hatchet.  I was
intrigued and decided to try the same.  His version has an asymmetrical
bevel (longer on the side closest to the wood).  This afternoon, after
harvesting some apple branches, I went to the shop and hacked and filed
away.  I haven't ground the bevels, yet or modified the curve of the edge,
but the current state of affairs can be seen here:
