256528 <ecoyle@t...> 2015‑10‑05 all this talk of lathes...
First off as an aside, most of us are oldtimers on the list x20+ years, some
not so old timers, have an appreciation of how the list evolved out of
rec.woodworking (20+ yrs ago), where the hand tool afficianados really got tired
of seeing a hunnerd posts of “which table saw to buy” and the thousands of
responses TOTALLY eclipsing any handtool posts

Ergo this list evolved for hand-tools/old tools/old ways with a fairly closely
adhered to charter dedicated to old ways/ hand tools, and the like leaving the
chatter about lectron burning tools to other venues. This has been reiterated
recently, but maybe some newbies may not be aprised of how this list-serve
evolutitated, and how it has survived, to my mind, because of it’s purity of
purpose.

.

From time to time, we all cross the lines of the charter and mention power tools
in handtool rehab, and have to offer to clean and polish the porch spitton and
by and large, the subscribers seem to deal with power tool questions elsewhere.
I figure you can ask a hunnerd questions about handtools, and then maybe toss in
an ‘lectron burning power tool question related to hand tools and get away with
it with appropriate apologies, but firstoff HAND TOOLS OLD TOOLS SVP

But all this talk of lathes, there are pole lathes, Just ask the friendly bodger
Richard Wilson. And treadle lathes

Maybe Claudio just wasn’t aware that not all lathes burn electrons. I’ ll be
betting he does now!.

And to my mind the Zyliss is uuseless as a lathe, as are most tube lathes. I
have one on hand, but only for potential site application as a vice. I paid a
pittance for it, so it can lie in wait for a call to duty.

But my real question is if anyone has any idea about an existing
nomograph/type study that would link length of handles to size of socket
chisel for London Pattern handles from a traditonal historic sense. All I seem
to find is “make it so it looks good” and ain’t nothin wrong with that for one-
offs, but to work towards a nice lookin set of chisels and respect the past it
would be nice to know. If such a thing exists
