Scott, you are right about that.  I find that if I don't see any old tools, if
you ask or tell people that you are after old tools, they often go into some
dark corner of the garage and emerge with something amazing!

Today was the day of all days here in Fairbanks, Alaska.  The family likes to
sleep late, so I usually slip out early Saturday mornings with a list of
craigslist listings.  This one wasn't on the list and didn't even have an old
tool to be seen.  Obviously one of the first persons there, I mentioned that
they didn't have any old woodworking tools and thanks for letting me look at
their stuff.  The guy says, actually i do. Hang on and i'll bring them out.  He
comes back out of the shed and says he has this old box full of planes that
someone gave him years ago.  As I turn around, I see that he is caring a box of
new, not old planes.  Bummer right?  Wait, they are all Lie Nielsen
planes!!!!!!!!!!!

After I gave him my tool money for the month ($50), I left with 8 planes in
rusty condition.  The box contained the following:

A number 164, a 40 1/2, a 62, a 5, a 5 1/2, a 3, and two no 4 1/2.

Here's a couple pics on my flickr page:

public/

Other than the rust, perfect condition.  The only thing missing was the no 62
lever cap.  Does anyone know if Lie Nielsen sells parts (didn't see them on
their website)?  The no 164 lever cap works with it, but it would be nice to
make them complete.

Last weeks yardsales I scored a 7/8" Stanley Everlast chisel with most of it's
meat ($3) , a few $1 old saws (Atkins and Warranted Superior), old tri square
marked The Midland Sheffield ($2), a nice Warrented Superior backsaw ($2) and
two japanese dovetail/detail saws ($2).

Who says old tools don't make it up here:)  Now, I just have to talk the lady
into selling me her husbands, grandfathers old cabinet makers tool chest (too
heavy to move) full of tools.  Got my fingers crossed, but I'm not holding my
breathe.

Happy tool hunting everyone!

peace.................jason
