Gracious Galoots,
OK, I admit, I was trying to have some fun with the pictures. I wasn't
sure where it would go as I hadn't completely thought it out. April
Fools only comes once a year, and though poorly thought out, I didn't
want to wait. The chest is a wonderfully accurate reproduction of
Duncan Phyfe's tool chest. It is perfect in every detail, from the
crotch mahogany saw till on the lid, to the brass trolleys on the main
till, to the ivory pulls on the veneered drawers. The only variation of
consequence that I can see is that the saw till on the lid holds six
saws, whereas the original holds only four. The chest was made by
Robert Soule. I didn't know him or know of him prior to getting
interested in the chest. Perhaps some of you knew him. He was a
prolific toolmaker. The following was extracted from his obituary and
other sources.
"Robert M. Soule passed away on March 29, 2014.He was 93.He was born in
New Haven, Conn. on October 31, 1921.He served in WWII in the 58th
Fighter Group of the 5th Air Force in Australia, New Guinea, Dutch East
Indies, Philippines and Okinawa. He was a cabinet maker at Yale
University and curator of the Garvin early American furniture collection
and in charge of all the exhibits there. He retired after 30 years as
superintendent of the Yale University Art Gallery.
He was an expert restorer of antique tools and maker of reproductions
and a member of the Antique Tools and Trade in CT (ATTIC).He was often
called on for his reproduction skills to make repairs to fine and unique
antique hand tools. He often made copies of these antiques for his own
use and the chest contains examples of his work. The tools in the chest
(backsaws, carving chisels, and miscellaneous) are of a similar type as
used by Duncan Phyfe."
For Kirk, doubting T, and others, here is another picture. Notice I've
rearranged the tools. Folks that know me understand I'm partial to
bright and shiny.

Here's the chest in its new home, not a museum. That is my Yuppie
Workbench in the foreground for those that remember it. It is hard to
believe that bench is nearly 13 years old.

The link for the workbench is still out there for those interested in
another workbench story.
