Yankee Magazine once had a humorous short story about a fellow who built his own
coffin from plans for a combination bookcase/coffin.  The idea was that when the
time came, the shelves would come out and there's your coffin. The lid was
somehow fastened to the back of the bookcase, ready to be relocated to the front
for coffin use.
 
The story included the man's wife being horrified to have this morbid piece of
furniture in their home.
