I think I have resolved the issue of who the New Haven Edge Tool
Company was, and just purely by luck and a 100 year old accident.
Today, an auction on eBay ended for a gouge with a double stamp. The
original stamp was "Jennings and Griffin". On top of that stamp is
"Haven Edge Tool Co.". I have relocated the photos of this chisel at
the link below.

I tried to snag it but was sniped. Live by the sword, die by the sword.
This seems to clearly indicate that Jennings and Griffin were
producing edge tools for Sargent under the New Haven Edge Tool
Company name. This makes a lot of sense because Jennings and Griffin
was a New Haven outfit (Yalesville, I think it is technically
Wallingford) in operation while Sargent was marketing NHETCo. By the
1911 Sargent catalog, the NHETCo. name was dropped. Although it is
unclear exactly when this happened, it may have coincided with the
companies demise or it's being bought out/turned into a C.E.Jennings
company, according to the DAT (no date specified). Or Sargent may
have bought the New Haven Jennings and Griffin works and the Jennings
and Griffin production moved to the C.E. Jennings plant in Deep
River. Who knows.
As I indicated earlier, there is no record that I can find of
NHETCo. as a separate identity ever existing in New Haven
Directories. I also picked up a copy of the chisel page from the
1894 Sargent catalog and it indicates that NHETCo. products carry the
same warranty as any Sargent product. Originally I assumed this
meant that NHETCo. was just a Sargent brand name, but it appears this
is not the case.
The DAT indicates that NHETCo. used the trademarks H. MACEY and
CARPENTER, but I can't say where this comes from or how correct it
is. The DAT also indicates that they were in operation in 1894, I'll
bet this refers to the occurrence in the 1894 Sargent catalog.
So why did Jennings and Griffin sell chisels to Sargent under a brand
name, as opposed to using their own? The Sargent catalog contained
many products from other manufacturers, why not Jennings and Griffin?
Another mystery. I guess the more we learn, the less we know.
The first mention I can find of NHETCo. being a Jennings product is
in an OldTools post by Gary Allan May, #98674, October 2001. Good
call Gary, right on the money.
