Early on, I'm pretty sure it was shellac. I don't know what they used on
the WWII era and later saws. Since you are removing the finish, I vote
for a coat of BLO and then go over that with shellac. Shellac makes a
real nice finish for a saw handle. And it makes for a quick job.
