Seriously, welcome to the Porch. (You too, Ken. And welcome back, Bill).
This is a great place. If you haven't had a chance yet, go check out the
FAQ, and it will save you a great deal of embarrassment (and spittoon elbow
- no fun, trust me).

I followed a similar path you did - I was looking into taking over my garage
and installing a cyclone dust collector. I don't remember exactly what first
inspired me to look into hand tools. I wish I did, but it had something to
do with internet searching. I'd had an old Stanley Handyman smoother that I
could never get to work right. Wasn't sure why as it came from my Dad who
took great care of his band saw, et. al., so this one should be in good
shape as well.

Then I learned what sharp really is.

Sounds like you've already learned quite a bit and have some good
experience. Glad to have you, and don't be shy.
