My KTW shave isn't my first (or second!) choice for straight grain.  I use
either a traditional woodie or the LV aluminum (aluminium, Jeff) low angle
version for that.  The cigar works best for those inside curves.

You might wish to double check that you are always working "downhill" on the
grain.  I know that when I mess up - which is quite regularly, just ask
SWMBO - it's because I lost track of which way the grain is heading.
