I never hold anything with my hands that is to be bored or turned on 
the lathe.  I use a wooden clamp which is big enough to prevent the 
object from turning if anything sets caught or otherwise tries to turn. 
  I don't mind a clamp being damaged when the alternative is damage to 
me.
