156879 "Lee Ireland" <leeleader@c...> 2006‑02‑12 Disston Handle Finish?
GGs:

This is the handle of my D-8 rip saw.

I am scraping off the remnants of the dark red finish. Does anyone know what
Disston used for the final coating on these Applewood handles?

Is it varnish, shellac, something else?

A WWII Disston brochure only describes the handle as, "Weatherproof".

Thanks,

Lee Ireland

Early on, I'm pretty sure it was shellac. I don't know what they used on
the WWII era and later saws. Since you are removing the finish, I vote
for a coat of BLO and then go over that with shellac. Shellac makes a
real nice finish for a saw handle. And it makes for a quick job.

Peter writes back:

Shellack is dissolvable in Metholated spirits (Ah, I think de-natured alcohol
Paddy). So soak a part of the finish with a wetted rag and see if it softens.

Varnish will wrinkle with the application of paint stripper - nasty stuff!
