50626 Tim Fuss <timfuss@k...> 1998‑09‑28 Last weekend: not a total loss!
Ya know, it seems that my garage sailing / rust hunting has been sorely
limited this year. Just way too much stuff going on. Last Friday, I
decided to bolt outta work for a long lunch. A couple of sale listings
held promise, but the usual sharks would have already had first pick. I
settled in for some good old bottom feeding.

This turned out to the the right frame of mind. The first sale looked
familiar, I'd been there last year. Back in the tool room, I spotted a
Stanley #4. Pretty sorry looking, with a brazed cheek, but the lever cap
said "Bedrock". Cool. it even had the original frog screws (both of
them! ;-) Added to the parts stash.

Two handsaws hung on the wall and if you've seen some of my previous
posts, you know I had to check them out. One was an Atkins pruning saw
in good shape. Since I didn't have one of these, I added it to my stash.
But it's the second saw which is really the purpose of this post. Yes,
it's time for yet-another-saw-question for the experts who are here
today.

This 5 point rip saw sports a nifty walnut handle, three raised nuts,
and a steel plate on one side of the handle. After cleaning the blade,
part of a logo emerged:

THE CELEBRATED (smaller upper case type)
LONDON SPRING STEEL (large blocky type, curves up and over the eagle
design)

(eagle w/ spread wings)

This beauty cleaned up and sharpened quite well and it seemed quite
content to munch through some 2" thick cherry.

Here's my chance to plug the sharpening video. I finally got around to
watching this birthday gift (thanks, MIL) and got inspired to do some
sharpening (finally got off the old duff). Most of the info in the video
was familiar from reading articles, but somehow, seeing it done made it
sink in a bit more.

Anybody know who the maker is, and how old it might be? I'm guessing
late 1800's by the style. It's price tag of $1 made the Atkins look
expensive at $6. You could say that I'm a fan of dollar-cost-averaging.

Thanks for listening, I knew you'd understand!

I got a very amusing picture in my head of a slovely (no offense intended,
Tim)
galoot windsurfing through a garage around the tables snapping up planes and
saws beatin' back the garage sale sharks with a #8.

Enjoy the day,

Chris Winter

sorry I can't help with the saw ID - sounds like a nice tool!
