Gentle Galoots, We are at B minus 9 days from the 2015 BAG-A-Thon. Festivities start around 10 AM on Saturday, September 12th at my house: 5505 Santa Cruz Ave. Richmond, CA 94804. My cell is 510/847-1720. Activities will include Tom Conroy's demo on Best English Octagonal handles To be performed on Joe Parker's (hopefully) completed Gentlemens Combination Workbench http: //img.photobucket.com/albums/v81/irnsrgn/odd/wwingbench.jpg (though I understand that Joe's bench is in COLOR!) Bill Kasper and I will be forging Roubo style planing stops at the anvil in the smithy, http://lostartpress.files.wordpress.com/2013/08/forp_stop_img_6967.jpg" >http://lostartpress.files.wordpress.com/2013/08/forp_stop_img_6967.jpg and we'll have two workbenches out for a scrub plane competition with valuable prizes!! So bring your 40, 40.5, radiused jack or euro horned scrub. Food is traditionally a combination of potluck that leaves everyone groaning. I'll have the grill with the brats and saurkraut going, along with beverages both hard and soft. This will also be the final wooden wine box distribution by Greg Hahn, so if you haven't yet built a spokeshave rack, biscuit jointer box or just classed up your scrap wood box, next week is your last chance. Rough headcount would be nice, but everyone is welcome. See you next week. Michael - frightening the neighbors since the year Four. -- |

"Wainscot oak" would be riven oak, later the best quartersawn oak, wide boards with lots of flake figure in it. The English regarded black walnut (jugulans nigra) as an inferior substitute, coarser and softer than jugulans regia; but I think that black walnut was being harvested out of old-growth forest so there was a lot more of it, while English walnut was only available as occasional ornamental and orchard trees. And there was always a shortage of jugulans regia, apart from anything else due to its popularity for gunstocks, so if I remember correctly they also imported a lot of it from France and even from the Middle East.
