140289 Kyle Accardi <sandbox@p...> 2005‑01‑03 Couple of Brit woodie inquiries
A 17" wooden jack plane found its way to me via Dawson, Yukon Canada; it's
simply marked:
H. OSBORN
NEWCASTLE

Can't find much info online about this company & I don't have any good books
(yet) on the subject. It's in pretty good shape save the replacement iron
which is too thin.

Another is a coffin smoother from S. Tyzack. Since there is a fair amount
of info in the archives, I'll be more specific. Body stamped:
TYZACK
RAILWAY ARCH
315 OLD STREET

and the iron:
S.TYZACK & SON LTD
345 OLD STREET E.C.

I gather that the 345 address was later and they used that until their
demise in the 1970's. Seems they may be more known for their saws...any
thoughts as to when they stopped making woodies?

Cheers,
Kyle Accardi

Kyle,
and GG's
Goodman has Henry Osborn at two addresses, High Street Southampton, and
Westgarth Rd Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
With dates from 1884 - 1967
Appears he was a dealer in tools, with stamps like "made for" and "Tool
Merchant"
Goodman has a note about an illustration of a cast iron, infilled, coffin shape
smoothing plane in a 1900 advert for a 278-page catalogue of tools for the
joiner and mechanic.
Interestingly I have a dovetailed infill rebate plane with a Charles Taylor
parallel blade that has below that mark a stamp
HENRY OSBORN Ltd
NEWCASTLE-ON-TYNE
Although this is the only mark on the plane, I've often thought this may have
been made for Osborn, as it is a very well made plane, with an attractive maybe
walnut infill.

In Melbourne, Australia, where recently more unusual rebate, and badger planes
are fighting over front row seats in the cabinet.
