50779 Mark.Westerman@l... 1998‑10‑01 Bio -- Mark Westerman
After lurking for some time, I felt that it must be past time to post
a bio.
I presently work as a structural engineer for an aircraft manufacturer. I
have
degrees in Physics and Mechanical Engineering, and have worked mostly
in aerospace companies, including NASA (Goddard SFC). However, many
years back, just before I was married, I worked for and managed a small
lumber yard in northern Iowa for about four years. At that time, my first
house
was an old frame house built in 1890. Over the next four years, I totally
restored
the house, back to near new condition. I had to make molding from scratch
to
match the old molding in the house, restore old pocket doors, and other
similar pursuits. This was apparently my initial push toward the slippery
slope.

I got started in woodworking with power tools, like most of you, but
somewhere
along the way, I got tired of the noise and ever present sawdust. I have
not
been totally weaned from the infernal Normite machines, but am definitely
in
withdrawl from them. I find it much more satisfying and often easier to
build
something without destroying electrons. So, I guess I'm more of a user
than a
collector. Although, I have an old transition Bailey, an old Buffalo post
drill, and
a few other odds and ends.

I am presently building a small hutch for my SWMBO of 20 years. This
must
come before my next project, a treadle lathe. The problem is that I need
to
turn the legs for the hutch base cabinet, and I haven't built the lathe
yet. Not
to worry though, I have a solution at hand.

Personally, my SWMBO of 20 years and the light of my life is an RN,
tennis
player, and quilter extraordinaire. I also have two sons in high school, a
freshman and a senior, neither of which seems at this point to want to
venture
anywhere near the shop. They are too interested in baseball, basketball,
and school. I keep working on them, and someday, they'll come around.
