Hi OldTools!

Not having posted any Q's yet and anxious do
do so, here's the prerequisite:

George Langford, Sc.D.
    (i.e., graduate metallurgist)
interests:
    old hand-powered drills
         post, breast, egg-beaters
    planers & shapers (metalworking)
    old machine tools (because made
         largely by hand)
    metallographs (some larger than lathes)
    non-Normie acivities with machine-tool
         building, e.g. hand scraping and
         general restorations (make it work
as good or better than new)
    access to metallography lab (Amenex)
         including scanning electron
         microscope (identify unknown
         metals ... )

My interest in hand scraping (used to get
good bearing & fit between the parts of a
machine tool) is parallel to most Galoots'
interest in making boards flat, smooth &
fit together, but involves simpler equipment
(a flat file sharpened on the very end,
prussian blue, & a surface plate) and lots
more patience.

The drills interest me because they come in
such endless varieties; some manufacturers
had dozens of models; and because a brace
(no gears at all) works as well or better
for making big holes ... my only criterion
is that the drill must be usable. This cuts
out the ones that are as pricey as Rolexes.

The old machine tools also have to pass the usable hurdle; I'm way behind in
restoring
the ones I already have, so "usable" is a
touchy subject in this context.

I hope to be able to contribute as much in
kind as I glean from these pages.

George
