277037 Nichael Cramer <nichael@s...> 2023‑02‑26 RIP John Wilson
I don't think I've seen anyone else mention this, but this afternoon's mail
brought a letter from The Home Shop with the following very sad news:

 "Dear Friends,

It is with heavy hearts that we write to inform you that John Wilson has died.
He passed peacefully on January 27th at home surrounded by family."

(The letter went on to say that The Home Shop will continue under the
 ownership of Eric Pintar.)

A online memorial page is available for John at:

I was sorry to hear of John's passing. I learned box making from him and
have continued to purchase supplies over the years. The world has lost a
fine gentleman.

Good to know Eric will continue the business.

Sad news indeed. The woodworking enthusiast community owes much to
John's insight, talent and relentless enthusiasm. I think it is safe to
say that there would be (almost) no Shaker Box makers today without him.
I posted the following obituary tribute to him in the Lansing State Journal:

John was an enormously talented, skilled and insatiably curious man. But
I remember him primarily as a kind, generous and trusting human being.
He lived and practiced his faith deeply without ever preaching, in a way
that most of us won't ever achieve.
Because he believed that knowledge should be shared, we are all richer
and wiser for having known him. I owe him much for the development of my
craft and regret I will never take a class from him in person.
The world is a better place because he passed this way.
Godspeed John

I saw this on the Lost Art Press Blog a little while ago.

John Wilson's teaching came to the Bay Area Galoots by way of Ralph
Brendler, in a big group build at Manny Hernandez's shop many years ago. A
great time was had by all and my own stock of Wilson swaged copper tacks
has dwindled over the years.

The smallest of Shaker Boxes made (000?) holds my ear plugs in the shop and
class is a treasured memory.

Glad to hear the Home Shop will continue.
