Here is an early rasp I acquired. I thoughtbit might be early because of the angled shoulders above the tang. It is marked "PARKIN" below a crown. Attached are some pictures are some pictures. I was unable to find any file-makers named "Parkin". There were several edge- tool makers by that name active in the 1830's, but since file-making is a separate trade, it wasn't one of them. Does anyone have any information on file-makers? If so,I would appreciate any information on this guy. Also, when did files develop their current shape with rounded instead of angled shoulders? Thanks, Rick |

Small data point. DAT does not have anyone listed as Parkin. And those named Parkins are drawknife and wood plane makers respectively. I would suggest that the presence of the crown makes them English, or German. My cutler's mark's list doesn't help trim down Tony's list any. I know its tableware, but occasionally I get a hit on tools. https://sha.org/assets/documents/Trademarks%20on%20Base-Metal%20Tableware.pdf p 200 - 201 Kirk in Half Moon Bay, starting the grind. Thanks for all the the information. I appreciate it! There are plenty of Parkins to choose from, but if I knew when file-makers started to round off the shoulders of their files, instead of making them angular, I'd have an approximate end date for my search. Does anyone know? Thanks, Rick |

Hi, In the photo the name looks more to me like "Rankin" (for what that's worth). Phil E. |

At first, I thought it was "Rankin" also, but I took a close look at it under raking light and with magnification. It's definitely "Parkin". The photo that I posted isn't all that good.. It was taken with natural light and with a point-and-shoot camera. Rick |
