275857 Bill Ghio 2022‑07‑03 Whatsit/drawbore pin?
I have had this pin laying around for a while now. I picked it up thinking it
was a drawbore pin, but thought I should ask for some thoughtful opinions. The
pin is 5 1/2 inches long, so shorter than what I have typically seen. It has a
hole driven through the upper portion to facilitate removal. From the
mushrooming on the head it looks to have been driven hard. There is what appears
to be an owner’s mark that reads “T.H. GOUGH”

So, drawbore pin or?

Yepper, that's a draw bore pin.  Early one at that.

I'm not convinced it's a drawbore pin. The mushrooming on the head
suggests it's been hit hard more than once. Unless perhaps you're trying
to align steel plates or some other hard material.

Which would make it a drift pin, no?  Or possibly a drawbore pin that's
been used as a drift pin.

Here is a small selection of some of the ones that I have sold over the

Hey Bill---I'd use it for drawing bores. Yes, it's been driven hard, but
certainly not at the point.. That part's got to be meant to find its way through
the smallest 'window', and guide the tool home before the striking and wedging
take place. I'd use it for that and not much else, that I can figger.

I'll probably have to eat crow. It looks like a typical style.

Cripes. At 19.5 lbs, isn't it an anvil with a handle?

Yeah, one would think that.

There is a local blacksmith that loves his hammers on the big side and
I'm waiting hear back from him on this guy.

Back in November he got this one from me.

Clocking the scales at a mere 21 lbs 4 oz.

I have a standing order from him for a 25 lb plus cross peen head.  Many
years back I had a 26 1/2 lb one, but they are pretty scarce.

Tony (nice day here, picnic time later)
