275786 John M. Johnston <jmjhnstn@m...> 2022‑06‑27 Sandy Moss
This is from a Facebook post I saw this evening:
"Sandy Moss, a friend to many saw as well as drill and brace collectors,
actually vintage tools of all stripes, can use our thoughts, prayers, healing
vibes, etc. I was with Sandy on Saturday morning at a tool auction where he
collapsed and had to be taken to the hospital by rescue. Many of you may know
him from his website sydnassloot.com. Sandy is a wealth of knowledge and a great
guy, now in his 80's."

Very sorry to hear this. You know, about a year ago I asked if any galoots knew
what happened to Sandy, since he hadn’t updated his website in over a year or
answered an email I sent him inquiring as to his well-being. At the time I
assumed it was Covid related. Glad he’s still with us and hope he makes a full
recovery from whatever this is. Please keep us updated, as I’m sure I’m not the
only one not on Facebook.

I have been away for a few days and just saw this post. Does anyone have
any updates?

I was pleasantly surprised to have bumped into Sandy at the Nashua tool
auction last month. I hadn't seen him in a few years and had also been
wondering about him. I knew that he left the tool business a few years
back, selling off all his stock, to focus mainly on his passion for whaling
artifacts.

When I saw him a few weeks back he looked fantastic, the usual Sandy with
his quick wit. In fact the first thing he said to me was something along
the lines of "So what have you been up to? other than putting on some
weight?" (punctuated with a poke to my midsection). We had a nice
conversation about all sorts of things. I learned he had a hard time last
year with some medical issues (mostly orthopedic) but was feeling much
better. I also confirmed that his website is no longer under his control
and he'd like someone to take over the custody of his trove of
brace information. It was fantastic to see him out there at the tailgate
sale.

I'm concerned about John's post. I don't follow any of the tool groups on
Facebook. Has anyone heard an update?

Josh,

I saw probably the same update that John saw on Facebook. I’ve seen nothing
since then.

Just news about the collapse at the tool show.

Maybe others here will fill in the gaps, if appropriate.

I heard from a friend and fellow tool dealer who was there when it happened
and who spoke to Sandy afterwards. Apparently it was a combination of
dehydration and the heat. Sandy told him he'd see him in Brimfield in a
couple of weeks which is good news.

Oh damn! I hope he's recovering well. It has been many years since I was super
active on this group, but I had a number of very pleasant interactions with him
back in the day.
I would appreciate updates if anyone hears anything.

In my life Sandy Moss has been one of the "big 4".
  Sandy
  George Langford
  Bob Nelson (founder of DATAMP)
  Jim "the old Millrat" Thompson

These 4 men made a tremendous impact in my life.

Here is one of Sandy's famous receipts. He'd write on the back of a
business card in tiny beautiful script.

That Disston #12 for 10 bucks was a precious, apple handled, 12 point
22" panel saw in lovely condition. For a dime.
The Disston #7 was a giant oversized rip saw that I eventually sent to
my pal Brian Buckner for his brilliant overhand rip saw project.

In older times, Sandy was the poor man's savior. When old tools were
literally gushing everywhere on the east coast, most other dealers
shipping across the country had the attitude of .........So what if I
get it for nothing, you can't. You can pay through the nose.
And you damn well better be grateful about it.

But Sandy always charged a flat rate percentage of what he paid.
Bless you Sandy Moss. You let me into a world I had little other chance
of entering.

Hi Scott
I'll bite. Did you make that handle or repurpose it from another saw? I've
never seen a No.7 with that sort of handle.

It was Brian who carved that.

Originally it is Deitrict's patent overhand rip saw. (there are only a
couple known in the world)

Brian n me were designing/carving saw handles and having a ball and
egging each other on.
He found a pic of the Deitrict somewhere and said, I can top that!!
I have some burled cherry wood in my yard and all I need is a huge
rip saw.

soooooooooooooo
I sent him my own big rip to use

And he done it. Go Bri
