271515 Christian Gagneraud <chgans@g...> 2020‑07‑18 Weird spade bit
Hi there,

Here is the weird spade bit i talked about in my last email:
https://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=2697358799&archive=1
The rightmost one.

Got distracted and forgot about this auction...

This bit seems to have a spoon end instead of a brad point.
Has anyone seen this kind of bit before? What could be the advantage
of such a bit?
Maybe to drill at an angle?

Chris,

Weird, for some reason, the link was wrong, looking at too many
auctions I guess...

Here you go, the one on the right is definitely unconventional to me:

It’s got a solid end. The end fits in an existing hole and the cutter makes a
bigger diameter hole. Most likely for making a hole for a plug.

Seen them in old catalogues.

Mick’s right of course, It’s for counterboring, when you forgot to cut the
larger diameter first. Not that I’ve ‘ever’ done that. Then had to make up a
plug of the correct diameter, use the original bit to mark the centre on the
plug, and use THAT as the centre of the required counterbore.

If only I had a set of counterbore bits..

Shipbuilders use a modern version of that for traditional *l*ctr*c drill motor.
For enlarging an exisitng hole, orfor making a counterbore area around an
exisiting hole

GG’s

In the metalworking world, such a tool is called a “counterbore”

I’ve seen the name piloted counter bore for the modern tool. I have one
Set that has inter changeable pilots, and Various drills. Great for
cutting recesses for saw medallions I’d assume, since I have not used it
yet. But it’s only been six years, no need to rush into things like this.

I keep a lot of counterbores.
You aren't really fitting saw screws / medallions without one. Plus a
lot of other jobs.

The aircraft industry uses a lot of them so hunt in the town where
they make airplanes.
They practically give used ones away.
You'll have to resharpen but sheesh thats 40 seconds out of your life.
hahah
They are very easy.

I silver soldered a brass plug to the end of a spade bit once, for a
really oddball counterbore I needed to make.
I can dig it out and take a pic but it looks just like what you
thought it would look like.

Thanks all for the details, it makes sense now. The pictures posted by
Nick are clearer, on the one i posted the shape of the tip was not
very clear.
