Wasn't there some speculation that Stradivarius made his unique
instruments from wood that hat been treated in an unusual way, leaving
residue that affected its tone?

Wonderful story! Gary Katsanis

Pretty cool. LIke in wood hoarding in general, guitar makers use about anything
they can find. There is 5,000 year old bog Oak that is near black, some of that
25,000 Australian wood that begins with a “K”, Redwood from railroad snow
tunnels that they are taking down - the famous one is “Tunnel 14 Redwood”, then
of course sinker wood, everything from the softwood logs out west like Sitka
Spruce that is washed up on shore, to curly Mahogany sunk a hundred years
ago.from Central America. It all sounds like a guitar.

and nobody but a luthier would cut those logs into 24” lengths

Hi Ed---
Shingle sawyers and shake splitters deal in 24" logs, even 16"ones;  they call
them 'cakes'; they're usually much bigger around than they are 'long'...

You’re probably thinking of New Zealand Kauri; https://en.wikipedia.org
/wiki/Agathis_australis">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agathis_australis <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agathis_australis">https://en.wikipedia.org/
wiki/Agathis_australis>

Kauri has been salvaged from bogs.

Not to be confused with West Australian Karri; https://en.wikipedia.org
/wiki/Eucalyptus_diversicolor">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eucalyptus_diversic
olor en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eucalyptus_diversicolor>

Both beautiful timbers.

New Zealanders, and West Australians may disagree, but Kauri is pronounced Cow-
re. And Karri is pronounced Car-re. Or at least they are here in Melbourne
Australia.

I’ve just realised there’s some Canadian viewers on the list who will now mangle
the Cow part of that pronunciation. Who knows what a Yorkshireman could do with
them!

If only English as spoken around the world could be pronounced correctly as it
is here in Melbourne. Oh well.

I should have remembered as I know a guy with a shigle sawing machine. You put
it a 1/4 of a log and it sort of rocks back and forth as it saws them so the fat
end is on the opposite side each time.

You’re right as usual Mr. G
