269979 Christopher Swingley <cswingle@s...> 2020‑02‑25 RIP Brent Beach
GGs,

I'm sad to report that fellow galoot and sharpening expert Brent Beach
passed away back in November (I think, based on the obituary below). I
never met him, and didn't have any personal interactions with him on
the List, but he was a long time contributor and had many interesting
things to say about tool sharpening. I appreciated his scientific
approach to sharpening and his willingness to challenge conventional
wisdom.

well, that just sucks. i always enjoyed "chatting" with him.

rest in peace, brent. at least now you'll have that ordered line of
molecules where the two planes of blade metal meet, forever.

Brenda contacted me last week and we came up with a plan to disperse Brent’s
tools. She will photograph them in groups, post the pictures to the list, and
solicit offers. She feels this will take her til March sometime to prepare. We
will all be in this position some day and can only hope that a significant other
cares enough about our stuff not call the auctioneer. Let’s all be generous.

Thanks for that. The news sucks though. Brent's contributions to wood
craft cannot be overstated. His methodical and analytical approach to
sharpening, and his focus on inexpensive methods and hand-crafted jigs
has proven very helpful to me. He was a true Galoot. I recently built
chisel-honing jigs for myself and my S-I-L based upon his design, and
and am very happy with the results.

I have been using his method for honing plane irons with great success
for some years.

He will be missed. Hopefully, his web site will be maintained.

This is such sad news.

Brent is our go-to man to debunk or endorse new-fangled sharpening notions. His
contribution to reasoned investigation and testing of sharpening is huge. Every
time I grab a stone and swipe a blade over it I hear him at my shoulder saying
‘if you do it the way I showed, it will be sharper’ and most times I answer him
back by saying ‘Yes, I know, but for this job, for the next five minutes, it
will be sharp enough’ and now I’m going to call over to his website, download
the material, look at that jig again, again, and make up my own ‘Brent Set’ of
jigs, and for the two or three planes that sit on the sidelines waiting for the
gnarly burr stuff they will forever after be sharpened to 'Brent Standard’
In fact - I think I’ll regard that as a new level. We have ScarySharp (r) and
now I’m going to declare ‘Brent Standard (r)’ as the galoot definition of
ultimate sharposity.

People come—they stay for a while, they flourish, —and they leave, far too soon.

Chris and Ed

Thanks for sharing. Glad to hear someone is in touch with the family.
Such a shame, gone way too soon.
