269895 Norm Wood <normw013@f...> 2020‑02‑06 Cant hook WTB
Hi all,

I'm in "need" of a cant hook. Before I go after a store-bought one, I
thought I'd check here first. I'm OK with getting just the business end
if it simplifies shipping - I can fit a handle to it. Let me know if
you have one you'd like to part with.

The back story is that I've been gifted a couple of freshly-cut,
forest-grown red oak logs. 8-9 feet in length, the bigger one is about
17 inches in diameter at the butt. It would be nice to have some
mechanical help to move these things around.

The smaller, rougher one of the two I intend to use for a hewing bench
and a shaving horse. Still pondering what to do with the nicer one...

Some pictures taken, not yet posted :)

Norm, if you are not offered anyone's second or even third best cant hook,
and you don't mind making the handle, a cant hook is one of the easier
forgings to do at the anvil. I could knock one out in an hour or so.
square corner, hook, punch a hole and bend it the hard way.

Glad to help

Lots of people demonstrate this on the interwebs, but here’s St. Roy.

My plan was to emulate Peter Ross more than Roy.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for that very thoughtful offer! It would be a real treat to have a
cant hook made by you. If it's not too much trouble, I'm terribly
tempted to take you up on it if one doesn't turn up. Let me follow up
with you soon off-list.

I've seen a few episodes of Peter with Roy, but this was one I'd missed.
Thanks for pointing it out.

I put up a couple of photos of the logs here:

I'm pretty happy with these and anxious to see what they look like opened
up, but I'm not sure this weekend's weather will cooperate.

It's difficult to compete with anything that Roy in it but I liked this
version a lot - made by Torbjörn Åhman.

Paul, in SF, looking forward to some shop time at the end of the day.

Thanks for that link, I was thinking of an earlier episode when Roy and
Peter races their way thru a pair of can’t hooks and the winner got to weld
up the froe !

A quick review of the St. Roy archive (thank you again Joe Parker!) and it
was season 2! 1980 or ‘81 maybe. Quite a treat to watch the same two guys
make the same thing 30 years apart. A galoot timeline if there ever was.

Roy’s cluelessness is an act. He may not have Peter’s skill set, (who does?
Among blacksmiths Peter Ross is a master of18th century efficiency), but
Roy was keeping up.

The more recent ep is much clearer in terms of instruction and process.

Now to figure out how to post the old episode
