Earlier this week I participated in a two day SAPFM workshop with Allan
Breed of https://www.allanbreed.com/ here in Atlanta GA. Well let me say it
was a lot of fun. I carved a convex Newport Shell. It was my first carving
and it didn't come out half bad (but I guess it didn't come out half good
either). Earlier this year I made the decision to take a week long class in
April on Carving in the Newport Style with Allan. I reached out to him to
ask whether I should invest/waste the time going to his two day SAPFM
workshop since I had ZERO carving time under my belt and whether it simply
made more sense to dive into the week long class. He told me he would set
me up with a shell in the two day workshop and gave me a list of carving
tools to get. Other than the sticker shock for Pfeil Carving tools (which
has now worn off) I think I made a great investment in time and new tools.

If anyone has a chance to take a class with Al I don't think they would be
disappointed. In general Al is a great guy and a proponent of hand work.
I'm sure he makes his first dimensional cuts with electrons, but as far as
I know he's hand tools all the way from that point. For those who don't
know of Al, I would suggest googling him as you can see some of his top
notch work.
