266527 "Ed O'" <edo@e...> 2018‑09‑17 FS Sept. 17 - Just a big patented vise
Send me your address if you want it, I'll let you know if you got it or if
it is already gone.

Standard old tool terms. I'll send you the total when I ship it, within a
day of two of receipt send me the payment. I'll ship parcel post or UPS
whichever is cheapest, unless you prefer something else.

Orders will be honored in the order that they are logged in. You can pay me
with a check (I can take PayPal, but they charge me a fee, $.30 and 3% of
the total including the shipping. If you can do Friends and Family on
PayPal there is no fee. If you want to go PayPal let me know as I use a
different email address for it and will give you that and a total).

Don't forget to include your address so I can give you an estimate on
shipping before I send it to make sure you are good with it. Packaged up it
weighs around 36 lbs. and the box is 8x17x26. You can take a quick peek at
usps.com or ups.com to get a feel for shipping to your zip from 02021 (east
coast of Massachusetts). I checked how much it would be to ship Beverly
Hills, CA and it was $86 (I use that as my fictional worst case for shipping
costs, although I think Texas is about as bad) and to ship from 02021 to
02021 was around $29.00. So you are looking at that kind of cost.

So if I haven't scared you off.

Wyman Patent Vise - $40

At first I thought it was a Sheldon Patent Vise (patent #656,793 for those
schooled in DATAMP.org), but that wasn't granted till 1900. The handle
looks to say 1892 to my eye. So I started looking at the patents around
that time and found the Wyman Patent(patent #340,930) which was granted in
1886. It is a closer match to the Wyman with the floppy bracket that
engages the teeth towards the back not the front. Also the hollow on the
back of the back jaw.

Chris Schwarz and the folks that used to be at Popular Woodworking have
raved about this style of vise for use as an end vise (search Sheldon Vise
and you'll see some write-ups). Anything Chris writes or wrote about seems
to instantly skyrocket in price (Sheldon's, router planes, Langdon Miter
Boxes, etc.).

So it is a big honking thing. Jaws are 9 inches wide and appears that it
would have a working range out to about 11 inches. It is a quick adjust,
with a rack cast into the part that mounts to the bench and a floppy bit
that gets kicked up by a cam arrangement from turning the handle to cinch
against the work and engage the rack. The top of the back jaw has broken
off (won't be an issue if you mortise your bench deep and then put a
mortised wood rear jaw pad over it, which is how I mount my vises because it
is easy and works well). It is dirty, it is rusty, it has marks on the
front jaw from being sawn into, the handle has some pitting on it you can
see in the last photos. It comes apart into 3 pieces. If you take it apart
off the bench it will take 2 people and a small child to do this most
likely, as the floppy bit will engage if you turn it upside down. I had it
in 3 pieces, assembled it to test it, then spent about 20 minutes getting it
back into 3 pieces as I jiggled it to get the floppy bit to flop down.
Mechanism works well when attached to a sturdy bench, but working with it on
the floor it is very fiddly.

Other than the top of the rear jaw I don't see any damage or issues. After
you clean it and paint it and mount it you should have a very nice vise.
