265884 Mike Rock <mikerock@m...> 2018‑05‑20 Nother Square
Got a square at the remains of an estate sale......even the dregs were
great.  The old boy was a collector, then dealer.  They'd had eight
auctions over the last several years and this was it.   A Marsh miter
saw made in Rockford, IL, brick carriers, which I need, lots of draft
horse stuff which my 8 guys and gals will love....  6 drafts and two
saddle horses......  BUT

Got this nice steel carpenters framing square, tapered legs, very cool
lettering, a small graduated section in hundredths of an inch, just
cool.   It has the logo of a diamond, inside is a large C with a single
sided serif pointing back, like half an arrowhead, and SC inside of that
large C.

Who made it??  Warranted Steel

God bless.

Southington Cutlery Co

This company may have started working as early as 1867, but possibly under
some other name. The name was changed to Southington Hdw. Co. ca. 1908 and
that company (which used the brand name SOHACO) worked into the 1950's.

Mark was CS Co (with the "S Co" inside a large "C" inside a diamond
outline)

I have a small square by them, just used it yesteday.

Southington also made a joint for take-down squares that was the winner in the
take-down-square-joint sweepstakes - simple and effective

Kirk,
Thank you!  That is the company for sure.  From the font of the
lettering and the numbers, this is early.  There are traces of nickel
coating on parts of the blade and tongue.

God bless.

They also made the nifty Hold-Fast sliding bevel, I believe,
which is one of my cooler acquisitions. Patented 12-15-14.

Yes, that is a cool bevel.  I have an all metal one just like the one in
the patent drawing #2.  It works really well.

I saw that when I was trying to find a photo of mine, since I
couldn't recall the name (finally gave up and went out to the shop).

It looks like LV pulled a Lie-Nielsen on this one, though I think
they could have been a little more specific with the credit:

"We got the germ of the idea for the cam locking mechanism on
these sliding bevels from a model made in the early 1900s."

It's a good bevel design, and locks well. I have the 10in and like it
very much. Veritas/LV has got a large collection of vintage tools upon
which to draw when they are designing a product. Too bad they
discontinued these.
