264500 Dave Leader <daveldr@c...> 2017‑12‑31 Slightly OT - except for who we are
Galoots All,

The Internet isn't really old enough to be an Old Tool, although many of
us old tools remember when DARPA hadn't come up with it yet. Many of the
early Porch sitters had some, or a lot, to do with what the Net is
today. This article struck a chord. I remember putting copyleft notices
on my stuff for decades so that it could be shared for free. Many of you
did too. Our newer members probably don't remember the same internet
that we pensioners do. That's a loss. I just felt a cold wind upon the
back of my neck and thought I'd share that this pre-New Year's Eve-Morn.

There are still some of us who remember.

Here I put this up because I wanted to. Feel free to whatever. I promise
I'll post absolute BS every once in a while. If wordpress tracks I can't do
anything about it, but I personally don't.

I can recall sitting in a meeting and having people discussing if there was ever
going to be any real use for this thing called "html" and "the web".....

264533 Mark Pfeifer <markpfeifer@i...> 2018‑01‑01 Re: Slightly OT - except for who we are
I’m mid vintage online.

I worked in books back then.

I remember publishers wringing their hands about the death of books, the end of
creativity, and the destruction of the free exchange of ideas.

Then Amazon made money....selling books, and the publishers kowtow to Amazon.

I remember when Google was trying to outdo Jeeves.

The comfort I take in this is that when our every fact is known, and people can
be fed new ones so very easily, war as the 20th century knew it is probably out
of date. Cold comfort, but comfort anyway.

I remember Kitty's animations.

My problem is that I keep looking for the 'like' button on email from the Porch!

With the safe links keeping me from opening any links attached to an email my
Old Tools time is much less enjoyable.
I feel like I'm a two year old wrapped up in a Snowsuit, gloves, idiot mittens,
hat, scarf, hood, sun block, ski googles, and a blanket and told to go have fun
in the snow.
Just because Mom's cold, or someone panics, is no reason to go nuts. I don't
need a babysitter.

We had 11 degrees at my house in metro Atlanta this am. Brought back good
memories of my days in NH ;-)
264630 Tim <tpendleton@g...> 2018‑01‑05 Re: Slightly OT - except for who we are
That is a tad chilly for your corner of the Porch.

We will dip below zero F tonight. That is just cold enough for me to burn
my New Year's Resolutions for warmth. :)

Its warmed up here a bit from last week. 65 F. in the house at 1 AM with the
furnace off and a penetrating drizzle. The weather service says its 57 F.
outside, but I took out a thermometer and it didn't get that low; of course, I
did flee rapidly inside from the cold. Last week it was in the middle fifties in
daytime. Hard times.
Just sayin'.

264716 "Joseph Sullivan" <joe@j...> 2018‑01‑12 Re: Slightly OT - except for who we are
You know, friends, the net/web is a neutral tool, like a hammer that can drive
nails for shelter or bash heads. Our list is one of the diminishing examples of
an entirely solid and wholesome use. It is irrelevant that the format is out of
date. The combined knowledge of the participants makes for a very high
likelihood of finding actual facts and information here. By contrast, the
newer, spiffier, easier formats fill up with misinformation both due to
ignorance and due to mischief or even malice. I have no idea the percentage,
but I find most widely disseminated information on the web to be faulty in one
way or another. These days, I take none of it at face value -- just use it as
another data point in an effort to learn.

So, with our obsolete email forum, we really have the best of it, and in the
words of the old Scotts toast, "here's to us, who's like us!"

Still learning after all these years. I have found that I can ask a question
here and get an answer, not an expletive laden rant by an agenda driven
"expert". There might be dicussion, but not accrimony.

This is home. I have to visit the crazy town for work but I don't live there.
