145817 "David F. Lucier" <dfl7@j...> 2005‑05‑12 Bio: David Lucier + WTB no.8 parts
Bio, bio; oh, ok, not alot to tell but I can spin a little out pretty
far. I'm a middle aged, bald, bespeckled, paunchy industrial electrician
with delusions of galootishness. Its great to get to the age where the
house is finally finished to SWMBO's tastes and I can pursue other
interests besides work. I've always been a tinkerer and have picked up
some things over the years. I had subscribed to the tailed philosophy of
wood working as my father had, but it just wasn't fun like I thought it
should be. I had always been interested in timber framing after playing
in some of the old barns as a pre-GIT, and now I can afford the time to
pursue it. The problem is that I happened upon this list and am being
slowly and inexorably drawn down the slippery slope. My purchase of a set
of Sorby framers and my dissatisfaction with them led me to start buying
a few old user framing chisels. Those initial buys have turned into an
obsession with morning and evening drool sessions perusing the bay's
vintage chisel listings. There is just something about an old Douglass or
Witherby framer that sets me off on the trail for more. Now the Stanley
bug has bit me, with ideas of sending that old no.8 down to Texas for a
rehab. I found another one in the shop tonight and it looks to be a WWII
vintage No. 4 type 17 with painted hard wood tote and knob, and a
japanned lever cap. A WWII No. 9 1/2 came my way at an estate sale last
weekend as well. Its in pretty good shape and without the handy holds. I
don't know how rare they are but they look and work fine, and satisfy my
obsession for now.

Thanks for the responses to my initial question on the No. 8. Looking
more closely, it seems as if the iron is worn to the point it needs to be
replaced, and there is a chip on the edge of the lever cap (durn cheap
Stanley built in cast iron scewdriver for iron disassembly screw).
Anybody have any of these parts they are interested in parting with for
$$ or barter for chisels?? If interested ping me back.

Thanks again all for your help. When I grow up I aspire to attain as much
galloot information as some here have (but my brain cells are telling me
otherwise).

BTW, Sorry about opening old wounds (sic) regarding free hand / jig
sharpening. But I do take umbrage at the gentleman(?) who posted:
Wot, Wot!!

Pray tell, sir Englishman, I can figure out the hippie/ commie thing, but
what is a prevert? ;-)

ducking lower and running faster
