Well, Galootapalooza is over (bummer), but the recap is available so that
those who were unable to attand can do so viacariously...

    http://www.mcs.net/~brendler/oldtools/galootapalooza/

I hope someone who attended the violin shop tour will post some pictures of
that-- from what people said, this tour was a real treat. I'm dying to see
what everyone was raving about...

Thanks to all who attended, and special thanks to Doug McLerran for allowing
a host of hungry galoots to invade his house for a weekend!

Remember, mark your calendars for next year! First weekend in August is
always the original (and still the best) galoot gathering-- Galootapalooza!

Now for the quiz. Which of these two galoots were seperated at birth?

Hi Folks,

Mark posted a nice summary of the weekend before I managed
to recover enough to do so, so I'll just add a few personal notes.
Thursday night saw a two year old with a mild fever, which meant I
got to come home Friday afternoon and sit with her until cousin Kirk
Hays arrived from Portland via Kansas City, which he did about
4 O'clock. Marched up to the door with a nice 3 patent date low knob
#6(fore plane, Jeff) in hand and says, "Hey, I just bought this a couple
blocks down from your house at a garage sale for $5". We let him
in the house anyway. On entry he then proceeded to hand me a NIB
Yankee drill which became the tool in the best condition in my shop.
I couldn't believe how clean and new looking a 75 year old tool could
be. Thanks, Kirk!
Saturday morning we got two benches and two fans set up in
the basement, and waited for the other shaker box makers to show
up. Moses Yoder came first, then in short order Ralph, Fausto Momoli,
Tod and Nathan Herrli, and Doug and Jessica McLerran all arrived, and by
11, after checking out Ralph's neat jeweler's lathe, all were
getting started on a set of cherry boxes in #1,2 and 3 sizes while I
mostly stayed upstairs getting ready for later.
My wife mentioned afterwards that she didn't think that she had ever
seen that many people working cheek by jowl so furiously for so long
with everyone being so happy about it. Ralph sure gets a big vote of
appreciation from me, because he put in a lot of advance work getting
bands and tops ready to go, and then ran the class with a lot of
good humor and good teaching. Jessica also wins some sort of award,
since I think there are not so many 12 year old girls willing to take
a woodworking class with their dad and a bunch of old guys(that would
be the rest of us).
After the boxes were made, we all exited the basement for a
while, and drank beer in the backyard and also stood around the trunk
of Marks car, looking at what he scored at the flea this year. I
must say that the guy could go pro...
After eating a bunch of Ralph's 5 alarm chorizo chili, Russ
and Cheri's salsa and cake, and Scott Posts chorizo stuffed chilies we all
marched down to the basement again. Ralph did a great sharpening
demo, especially given the pressure of having some of Fausto's Tom Law
sharpened saws there. What he did came out great, and I have
another sharp user to thank him for. This was a real woodie
display also, as Scott Post showed up with some lefty planes he
has made, and Tod Herrli brought some if his beautiful work as well.
Scott planes are on his website, but they are even nicer in person,
and it's so nice to see a plane going in the direction god intended(left
handed, that is). Really like his walnut plow, even if he says
the tote was too much work! Tod let us demo some of his planes, and
it is amazing how smoothly they cut. I think Mike Davies
had shavings flying 3 feet out of one of Tod's planes. Scott also had a
droolable collection of C&W floats that he showed us, before whipping
out his C&W smoother. Lots of guys standing there in disbelief at how
great that plane works. Major hang time. I got called off and missed
the combo-plane plane off and Tod's demo of making cutters, sometimes
that happens when you host, but I really hate to miss anything Tod
says, because I always learn something when he does. I really have got
to take one of Tod's classes soon. It was great to have some new
faces there, and I hope that Jerry, Wes, Gil, Alan, and Greg can make
it next year - especially since Wes is hosting...
Sunday morning saw a bunch of yawning folks out at the
Garfield farm meet. Joe got some great stuff there, and the back of
his Taurus was dragging as he left, and I didn't see anyone looking
unhappy. I was pleased to find a nice 28" Disston #12 ripsaw so that
my total number of dull saws didn't actually change when I integrate
over the weekend. Wes Groot showed up finally, and he had gotten even
less sleep than the rest of us! Not sure what all every one else
scored there, but I hope to hear about it. Time for a nap Sunday
afternoon, then ate some leftovers, and toasted the weekend while
drinking a glass of the single malt scotch Mark brought, for which I
would like to thank him again. I had a great time this year, as
usual, and also as usual, I am already looking forward to next year.

Best regards, Mike

Chorizo Chili? Chorizo stuffed Chilies? We need receipes, man. No galoot
should mention
such galootish comestibles without providing receipes.

Drooling in Boise,

Bob
