I feel unworthy to be in the presence of such an august group, so
please have patience with me.

I am a software engineer with a medical equipment manufacturer in
Milwaukee, WI. I design interfaces to link our systems to other hospital
systems. This pays the bills. When not working, I try to keep up with our
five young children, ages 9 years to 3 mo.; a house and a yard; and if
any time is left over, work in my shop.

I am new to the whole area of working with hand tools, but have quickly
come to the point of being frustrated with the lack of quality new hand
tools, besides collecting old tools is interesting and fun. I am still a
recovering Normite, yes I admit it. I have found that the satisfaction that
one gets from working with more traditional methods is much greater
than with newer methods (power tools). I have found that I get very little
satisfaction with the process when using power tools, only the
finished product. In addition to the satisfaction that one gets from
traditional wood working methods, I also wish to pass along some of
these methods to my children along with hopefully some additional
appreciation of who their great-grandfather was. My grandfather spent
his career as a finish carpenter in the days when they site build all of
the cabinets. Other than a table saw and the occasional use of a
circular saw he rarely used any power tools. He always said that he
could finish the job with his hand tools in the amount of time that it took
to set up a power tool to do the same job.

A lot of lines to say that I am new to all of this and hope to learn a great
deal from all of you and maybe contribute something intelligent once in a
while.
