272407 <joe@j...> 2021‑01‑04 Saw till spacing
Galoots:

A saw till has become a necessity in my shop. Honestly, it has been one for
years but I stacked, hung, stashed and ignored them because of higher
priorities. Now is the time.

Here is the question: If one needs to optimize space without packing them
too tightly, what is the reasonable minimum spacing between saws? I had
thought perhaps 1.25 inches was about right, but don't know for sure and
have no plans or descriptions that deal with spacing.

Cheers!

J

The slots the blades slip into are 1 1/2 inches apart on mine. Not crowded, but
not major gaps.

Here’s one inch - no problems with access, I just grab the blade and tip it
outward

Joe:

I just got home from work and looked at my saw till (which you can also look at
using the following link that follows).

https://1drv.ms/u/s!ArS-Ih_xdc4Mn5I4XCUAotXhJ4qLMg?e=0X7g3W

I have some slots that are 1 inch apart--and that works but it is as close as
you can get. I have other slots that are 2 inches apart, which is really more
than you need.

So if I were going to do it again (which in my case only means redoing the
central block with slits in it), I'd probably do them 1.5 inches apart.

Eric,

To paraphrase my nephew, the difference between a galoot with a Saw Problem and
a Passionate Collector is organization!

You seem to have compact organization of a handsaw collection down to a science,
including teeth-up visibility of the type of saw. ( Rip, Crosscut, Coarse, Fine,
etc. ) To boot, they are in safe storage.

Bravo Zulu !

Wow, just wow as well

Mine is 1-1/4" also. Mine is set up high on a wall, so reaching the top to
pull them out by the blade tip isn't happening. I also have a tool chest
in front of it, making it a bit more of a reach

Kirk Eppler, wondering why that first meeting even existed.
272453 Joe Jerkins <jerkinsjoe@g...> 2021‑01‑06 Re: Saw till spacing
Yes, but not always intentional. If I were to do it over again, I'd make
the front bar holding the handles a bit higher (~1/2"). At 2-1/4" it
sometimes doesn't give enough "lean" to the saw so it stays in the slot.
Alternatively, I could make the angle smaller by increasing the depth of
the till, but that would make it stick out from the wall further (not sure
if that's a pro or a con; just different)

I have Joe’s problem too !

but I have 2 solutions.

First - the one favoured by domestic authorities - pass them (all) on to someone
else, by selling, long-lending, giving away etc.

Second - my plan, long in gestation, build a saw till.
This is the one that gets my vote - plus a bit of culling. I have
pondered the question of spacing ever since the galoot group build of saw tills
last century, and I have the sketches to show a saw till which works with saws
alternately handle down and handle up - this packs in a huge quantity, but you
need access to pick them from the ends- a finger at top or bottom to lift and
tilt.

Bu the one thing I haven’t heard mentioned in so many words is - graduate the
spacings.

Have one side, or the centre, for your ‘users’ - the 3 or 4 which are the ones
you usually use, and have theses spaced for easy grab’n go. Either side can be
pack’m in with minimum spacing, and doubled up, top to tail, or tall’n short the
way Eric was it, had them.

Sometime soon I really WILL make a rack for them…..

Richard,

You may find this quotation helpful:
“P.S. If you do not receive this, of course it must have been miscarried;
therefore I beg you to write and let me know.” - Sir Boyle Roche, M.P.

Roche was a real character, some of his other quotes are wonderful too.

Cheers,

Very interesting concept...

I of course have some that are not yet restored, some that are but are dull,
some historic and not to be generally used...AND some that must be conveniently
at hand. Graduation might be just the ticket.

I'm the mindset of Get-R-Done, I'll share a partial picture of my MVP
(minimum viable product) saw till. I didn't measure much of anything, it's
all scrap wood. I think the handle bar is an old mop handle saved from the
garbage man. I needed a saw till and plane till and had nearly no time,
space, or a set up shop for anything fancy. It's the ugliest saw till I've
ever seen, but it does work.
